Flying with Turkish Airlines? Vegan passengers can request a dedicated plant-based meal on international flights. But the meal must be ordered in advance, and there are a few important limitations to know before boarding.
Here is what vegan travelers need to know. 👇
🌿 Yes, Turkish Airlines offers a vegan meal
Turkish Airlines offers a special Vegan Meal, identified by the international airline code VGML.
According to the airline, the meal does not contain:
❌ Meat or meat products ❌ Fish or seafood ❌ Poultry ❌ Milk or dairy products ❌ Eggs ❌ Honey
The meal may include lentils, beans, tofu, grains, vegetables, fruit and nuts. The exact dishes change according to the route, departure airport and cabin class.
Vegan meals are available in both Economy and Business Class, although the menus may be different. There is no additional charge for the special meal.

⏰ Order your meal at least 24 hours before departure
You must request your VGML meal at least 24 hours before the flight.
You can place the request through:
📱 The Turkish Airlines mobile app 💻 The “Manage Booking” section of the website ☎️ The Turkish Airlines call center 🏢 A Turkish Airlines sales office
Miles&Smiles members can also save a special meal preference in their membership profile. However, it is still sensible to check every individual booking.
After requesting the meal, take a screenshot of the confirmation. If your flight time, aircraft or reservation changes, check the meal request again.
🌍 The service is primarily for international flights
Turkish Airlines specifically describes its special meal service as an option available on international flights.
The airline serves food on domestic flights too, but a dedicated VGML meal is not officially promised on those routes.
Turkish Airlines says vegetarian sandwiches may be served in Economy Class on domestic flights. Remember that vegetarian does not mean vegan. A vegetarian sandwich may contain cheese, milk, butter, mayonnaise or eggs.
For domestic flights, bringing your own food may be the safest option. 🥪

⚠️ Choose “VGML,” not simply “vegetarian”
Do not select a vegetarian or Asian vegetarian meal unless you have checked its definition carefully.
For example, Turkish Airlines’ Asian or Hindu vegetarian meal, identified as AVML, may contain dairy products. It is suitable for some vegetarians but not for vegans.
The correct code for a meal without animal-derived ingredients is:
✅ VGML: Vegan Meal
If you make the request by telephone, use both the words “vegan meal” and the code “VGML” to reduce the possibility of confusion.
📋 Your vegan meal may not appear in the digital menu
Turkish Airlines allows passengers on certain routes to view the onboard menu before departure. However, the airline states that special meals do not appear in its digital menu.
Therefore, not seeing VGML on the digital menu does not necessarily mean your request has been cancelled.
Check the special-service details in your reservation or contact the airline directly.

✈️ Check who is actually operating the flight
A flight carrying a TK flight number is not always operated by Turkish Airlines.
On codeshare flights, the rules and meal services of the operating airline apply. If another airline is operating one part of your journey, contact that airline and request a vegan meal separately.
Check every flight segment, especially when your itinerary includes a connection. 🔎
🥜 A vegan meal is not an allergen-free meal
This is one of the most important warnings.
Turkish Airlines does not guarantee that its meals or aircraft cabins are completely free from allergens. Special meals are prepared in facilities where dairy, eggs, nuts, gluten and other allergens may also be handled.
A VGML meal is designed for a vegan dietary preference, but it should not be treated as a medically certified dairy-free, egg-free or nut-free meal.
Passengers with serious food allergies should:
💊 Carry prescribed medication in their hand luggage 🩺 Discuss their travel plans with a doctor ☎️ Inform Turkish Airlines before the journey 🥡 Consider bringing suitable food as a backup
Vegan meals may also contain nuts, soy, gluten or legumes.
🥡 Can you bring your own food?
Yes. Turkish Airlines says passengers may bring food that does not require refrigeration, heating or special handling.
The cabin crew cannot heat your meal or store it in the aircraft refrigerator. Liquids, sauces, soups and semi-liquid foods may also be restricted by airport security rules.
Practical options include:
🥜 Packaged nuts or seeds 🍎 Whole or dried fruit 🥪 A securely packed sandwich 🍫 Clearly labeled vegan snacks 🥨 Crackers or dry baked products 🥣 Instant food that does not require assistance from the crew
Remember that some countries restrict the entry of fresh fruit, vegetables and other agricultural products. Finish or dispose of restricted food before passing through customs at your destination.
🛋️ What about Turkish Airlines lounges?
Turkish Airlines lounges offer salads, fruit, vegetable dishes, breads and other foods that may be vegan. However, the airline does not publicly guarantee a dedicated, separately prepared vegan lounge menu.
Do not assume that a dish is vegan because it looks plant-based. Ask about:
🧈 Butter 🥛 Milk or yogurt 🥚 Eggs 🍯 Honey 🥩 Meat or chicken stock
Cross-contact may also be possible at open buffets and shared serving stations.
❓What if your requested vegan meal is not served?
Requesting VGML in time gives the airline a clear record of your meal preference. However, Turkish Airlines notes that food options and services may change for operational reasons.
There is currently no fixed compensation under Türkiye’s air-passenger regulations specifically for a missing or incorrect vegan meal. The statutory compensation system mainly covers cancellations, long delays, denied boarding and changes in travel class.
If your confirmed VGML meal is missing:
📸 Photograph the meal or unsuitable alternative 🧾 Keep your boarding pass and reservation confirmation 👩✈️ Inform the cabin crew during the flight 📝 Submit a written complaint to Turkish Airlines after arrival 💳 Keep receipts for any necessary food purchases
A missing special meal does not automatically create a right to a ticket refund or fixed financial compensation. However, passengers can still ask the airline to investigate the service failure.

✅ Vegan flight checklist
Before leaving for the airport:
🌱 Select VGML for every eligible flight ⏰ Make the request more than 24 hours in advance 📱 Save a screenshot of the confirmation 🔄 Recheck after any booking or schedule change 🎫 Confirm the request at check-in 👩✈️ Speak to the cabin crew before meal service 🥡 Carry backup food or snacks
The short answer 🌍✈️
Turkish Airlines provides a clearly defined vegan meal on international flights, making it possible to travel without relying on the standard onboard menu.
But VGML must be ordered in advance. It is not guaranteed on domestic flights, does not provide an allergen-free environment and may be affected by operational changes. A confirmed request plus a small backup meal remains the safest combination.
