Turkish cuisine has plenty to offer vegetarians, but vegetarian and vegan are very different things at a Turkish table.
A dish described as etsiz or “without meat” may still contain cheese, yogurt, milk, butter or eggs. Even vegetable-filled pastries and pide can hide animal ingredients in the dough, sauce or cooking fat.
For vegan travelers, the trick isn't simply knowing which dishes contain vegetables. It's knowing what to ask before ordering.
Here are some popular Turkish vegetarian foods that vegans should approach with care. 👇
🍳 1. Menemen
WHAT IS IT? One of Turkey's classic breakfast dishes: eggs cooked with tomato and green peppers.
🥬 VEGETARIAN? 🟢 Usually
🌱 VEGAN? 🔴 No
⚠️ WATCH OUT FOR
Traditional menemen contains eggs. Some versions also contain sucuk, a Turkish spiced sausage.
🇹🇷 ASK
“Sucuksuz mu?”
Is it without sucuk?
🌱 VEGAN TIP: Removing the sucuk does not make traditional menemen vegan, the dish itself is egg-based.
🥒 2. Mücver
WHAT IS IT? Turkish zucchini fritters made with grated zucchini and fresh herbs.
🥬 VEGETARIAN? 🟢 Usually
🌱 VEGAN? 🔴 Usually not
⚠️ WATCH OUT FOR
🥚 Egg 🧀 Cheese
A dish made mostly from vegetables isn't necessarily vegan.
🇹🇷 ASK
“İçinde yumurta veya peynir var mı?”
Does it contain egg or cheese?
🥧 3. Börek
WHAT IS IT? One of Turkey's best-known pastries, made in many shapes with fillings such as cheese, spinach or potato.
🥬 VEGETARIAN? 🟢 Many varieties are.
🌱 VEGAN? 🔴 Don't assume so.
⚠️ THE FILLING ISN'T THE WHOLE STORY
Even patatesli (potato) or ıspanaklı (spinach) börek may contain:
🥛 Milk 🥣 Yogurt 🧈 Butter 🥚 Egg
These ingredients can be used between the pastry layers or brushed over the top.
🇹🇷 ASK
“Hamurunda veya sosunda süt, yoğurt, tereyağı ya da yumurta var mı?”
Does the pastry or sauce contain milk, yogurt, butter or egg?
🧀 4. Peynirli Pide
WHAT IS IT? Boat-shaped Turkish flatbread baked with cheese.
🥬 VEGETARIAN? 🟢 Usually
🌱 VEGAN? 🔴 No
⚠️ WATCH OUT
Peynirli literally means “with cheese.”
🌱 VEGAN TIP: Ask whether a vegetable pide can be prepared without cheese, egg or butter instead. Also check whether the dough contains dairy.
🥒 5. Cacık
WHAT IS IT? A refreshing Turkish yogurt dish made with cucumber, garlic and herbs.
🥬 VEGETARIAN? 🟢 Yes
🌱 VEGAN? 🔴 Traditionally no
⚠️ WHY?
Traditional cacık is made with dairy yogurt.
🌱 A vegan version requires plant-based yogurt.
🌿 6. Haydari
WHAT IS IT? A thick, garlicky yogurt-and-herb meze.
🥬 VEGETARIAN? 🟢 Usually
🌱 VEGAN? 🔴 No
⚠️ WHY?
Traditional haydari is dairy-based and may also contain cheese.
Don't assume that a cold vegetable or herb meze is automatically vegan.
🥟 7. Mantı
WHAT IS IT? Tiny Turkish dumplings traditionally served with garlic yogurt and a butter sauce.
🥬 VEGETARIAN? 🔴 Standard mantı isn't vegetarian either.
🌱 VEGAN? 🔴 No
⚠️ IMPORTANT
Traditional mantı normally contains minced meat inside the dumplings, then comes topped with yogurt and butter sauce.
Simply asking for it without yogurt doesn't make it vegetarian or vegan.
🌱 Look specifically for a clearly identified vegetarian or vegan mantı instead.
🥐 8. Poğaça
WHAT IS IT? A soft savory pastry commonly eaten for breakfast or as a snack.
🥬 VEGETARIAN? 🟢 Many varieties are.
🌱 VEGAN? 🔴 Usually not
⚠️ THE FILLING ISN'T THE ONLY PROBLEM
Poğaça dough commonly contains:
🥛 Milk or yogurt 🧈 Butter or margarine 🥚 Egg
Cheese-filled varieties also contain dairy.
🇹🇷 ASK
“Hamurunda süt, yoğurt, tereyağı veya yumurta var mı?”
Does the dough contain milk, yogurt, butter or egg?
🥕 9. Havuç Tarator
WHAT IS IT? A popular Turkish meze made with grated carrot and a creamy yogurt-garlic dressing.
🥬 VEGETARIAN? 🟢 Yes
🌱 VEGAN? 🔴 Traditionally no
MAIN INGREDIENTS
🥕 Carrot 🥣 Yogurt 🧄 Garlic 🌰 Often walnuts
⚠️ WATCH OUT
Its vegetable-heavy appearance can be misleading: traditional havuç tarator contains dairy.
🌱 A vegan version requires plant-based yogurt.
🍳🧀 10. The Turkish Breakfast Table
A traditional Turkish breakfast can look incredibly vegan-friendly at first glance: tomatoes, cucumbers, olives, bread, preserves and fresh vegetables fill the table.
But several staples are vegetarian rather than vegan.
⚠️ LOOK OUT FOR
🧀 Beyaz peynir White cheese 🧀 Kaşar Yellow cheese 🥚 Yumurta Egg 🧈 Tereyağı Butter 🍯 Bal Honey 🍳 Menemen Egg-based dish
🌱 THE GOOD NEWS
Olives, tomatoes, cucumbers, tahin-pekmez, many fruit preserves and some breads and simit can help build a substantial plant-based breakfast.
Just remember to check the ingredients rather than assuming.
🇹🇷 One Sentence Worth Saving
When you're unsure, don't rely only on “etsiz” it simply means “without meat.”
Instead, say:
“Veganım. Et, tavuk, balık, süt ürünleri, yumurta ve tereyağı yemiyorum.”
I'm vegan. I don't eat meat, chicken, fish, dairy products, eggs or butter.
It takes a few seconds and can prevent a lot of confusion at the table.
📌 Save this for your Istanbul trip. Tag another vegan or vegetarian traveler who needs it.
