🧆 Is Falafel Vegan? Check the Sauce, Too

Falafel is usually plant-based. But a falafel wrap or plate can still contain yogurt, egg-based mayonnaise or cheese. Be careful with what to ask before ordering in Istanbul

🌱 What is falafel made from?

Falafel is a Middle Eastern dish made from ground chickpeas, broad beans or both, mixed with herbs and spices, then usually fried. A traditional recipe needs no meat, dairy or eggs. Good Food’s chickpea-and-broad-bean recipe, for example, uses plant-based ingredients. Good Food Middle East

That makes falafel a possible vegan meal, but the name alone does not confirm every restaurant’s recipe.

👀 Can the falafel itself contain egg?

Yes, some variations do. For example some of the beetroot falafel recipe includes egg and breadcrumbs. This does not mean egg is standard in falafel but it means you should check the mixture, particularly when ordering an unfamiliar version.

🥙 The wrap needs its own check

Even when the falafel is vegan, the finished meal may not be. Yogurt and mayonnaise are among the accompaniments suggested in some baked falafel recipe. Ask about the sauce, bread and any added cheese before ordering.

Plain tahini is sesame paste. A prepared tahini dressing, however, still needs an ingredient check. “White sauce” is a description, not an answer.

🗣️ Save these questions on your phone

“Falafel harcında yumurta veya süt ürünü var mı?”

Does the falafel mixture contain egg or dairy?

“Sosunda yoğurt, yumurta veya süt ürünü var mı? Ekmeği de vegan mı?”

Does the sauce contain yogurt, egg or dairy? Is the bread vegan, too?

“Veganım. Yoğurt, peynir ve yumurtalı mayonez eklemeyin, lütfen.”

I’m vegan. Please don’t add yogurt, cheese or mayonnaise containing egg.

🌾 Is falafel gluten-free?

Do not assume so. Some recipes contain breadcrumbs, and the bread served around the falafel is a separate concern. If you have celiac disease, ask about the mixture, sauces and shared fryer as well. A vegan label does not establish suitability for celiacs. See our gluten-free food guide
