🫓 Is Lahmacun Vegan? Where to Find Vegan Lahmacun in Istanbul

🫓 Lahmacun is on your Istanbul food list. But can you eat it as a vegan? We checked what goes into it and where to find a plant-based version on both sides of the Bosphorus.

Usually, no. The lahmacun sold at a typical bakery or restaurant has minced meat in its topping. But you can find a fully plant-based version in Istanbul.

Lahmacun is a thin flatbread baked with a seasoned topping. A squeeze of lemon and a handful of parsley may be how you finish it, but neither changes what went into the oven. As our vegan and vegetarian FAQ explains, ordinary lahmacun is not vegan because its topping contains meat.

🌱 What makes a lahmacun vegan?

The meat topping needs a plant-based replacement, and the dough and any finishing ingredients must contain no animal products. Vegan Masa, for example, describes its lahmacun as using a wheat dough with a vegetable and soy-protein filling. A topping advertised as meatless is not enough on its own to confirm the whole dish is vegan.

📍 Where can you try one?

Beşiktaş: Vegan Masa, Türkali, Mısırlıbahçe Sokak No: 8/A. Its kitchen is fully vegan, and its lahmacun is also mentioned in our Beşiktaş to Sarıyer guide

Kadıköy: Vegan Masa, Osmanağa, Vahap Bey Sokak No: 18/A. The restaurant describes itself as a stone-oven venue for vegan lahmacun and pide.

Check the current menu and opening hours before travelling across town. The two branches are on opposite sides of the Bosphorus, so pick the one that fits your day.

🗣️ Ordering somewhere else? Ask this

“Lahmacunun harcında et veya hayvansal ürün var mı? Hamuru tamamen vegan mı?”
Does the topping contain meat or any animal products? Is the dough completely vegan?

If staff cannot confirm both, choose a clearly identified vegan dish instead. Also ask separately about wheat or soy allergies: vegan does not mean gluten-free or allergen-free.
